What is counseling?

Counseling is a process that uses psychological and spiritual tools to help people find mental and spiritual health and fulfillment in life.  In counseling, clients are asked to talk about their problems and how they want to change.  Various types of “homework” are often required.  Examples are: getting a medical examination, providing family information, starting an exercise program, initiating a devotional time, or joining a support group.

The goal of counseling is to bring about change in one’s thinking and living that will enable one to make healthy and wise choices.  One may not be able to eliminate problems, but one can learn to handle problems in a healthy way.  That is the object of counseling!

Confidentialty

Confidentiality is an essential and integral part of counseling.  It is also required by the counselor’s Code of Ethics.  However, there are times when exceptions must be made.  If a client shows intent to hurt oneself, appropriate authorities must be notified.  If a client indicates an intent to harm someone else, the potential victim must be notified.  If it is learned that a child is being physically or sexually abused, that fact must be reported.  In rare instances, information about a client may be subpoenaed by the court.
